Police Log: 150 Chapel of the Chimes Headstones Vandalized; Man Fights Off Robbers During Gold Chain Snatching

Reports also include reports of suspects being arrested while trying to burglarize a marijuana grow house and a parolee arrested for having brass knuckles, among others.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the Union City Police Department. The document contains only items of note that occurred July 5 to 11. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, July 5

Suspects force open side garage door to burglarize Deobrah Drive home

Sometime between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., an unknown suspect or suspects forced open the side garage door to a residence on the 32000 block of Deborah Drive to burglarize the home. The loss is unknown at this time.

Man fights off robbers during attempted gold chain snatching

At 5:23 p.m., officers responded to a just occurred strong-arm robbery on the corner of Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street. The victim was walking alone and wearing a gold chain around his neck when he was attacked by two men who attempted to tear the chain off his neck. The victim was able to fight back and retrieve his gold chain, minus the gold medallion that was attached to the chain. The suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction. No arrests were made.

Friday, July 6

Suspects arrested while trying to burglarize marijuana grow house

At about 5:48 p.m., officers responded to the area of Perry Road and Farrol Avenue to investigate an in-progress burglary. Witnesses reported seeing two men peering into a Perry Road home in a suspicious manner.  A suspected get-away vehicle parked nearby was described as a white 4-door sedan.

Officers caught sight of both suspects and they fled through neighboring back yards, jumping over fences. An officer located one of the subjects and detained him in handcuffs pending the initial investigation.

The victim’s residence was determined to be a “marijuana grow” house. The Major Crimes Task Force responded and took over the investigation as it involved a large number of cultivated marijuana plants.

The suspects that were detained were arrested on suspicion of residential burglary and possession of more than one ounce of marijuana.

Parolee arrested for possessing brass knuckles

Later this night at about 10:15 p.m., an officer made a routine traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of Granger Avenue and Randall Court. The passenger of the vehicle was on searchable probation, so the officer conducted a probation search. The officer located a pair of brass knuckles that were hidden in the passenger compartment. The driver was arrested on suspicion of possession of brass knuckles, which is a felony in California.

Saturday, July 7

Driver arrested for screeching tires, reckless driving

At about 1:09 a.m., an officer on patrol in the Union Landing Shopping Center heard a vehicle screeching its tires in the area of IHOP. The officer drove toward that area and saw a vehicle being driven in a reckless manner. The officer made an enforcement stop and arrested the driver on suspicion of reckless driving.

Wednesday, July 11

150 headstones vandalized at Chapel of the Chimes

The Chapel of the Chimes reported that approximately 150 headstones were vandalized with motor oil. The damage was contained in the “Inner Sanctuary” area of the cemetery and the motor oil appeared clean and unused. The motive is unknown at this time.

Parolee arrested for possession of meth

Later this night at 11:42 p.m., an officer made a vehicle traffic stop on the 30000 block of Courthouse Drive. The driver was on parole, so the officer conducted a parole search of the driver and his vehicle. The officer found drug paraphernalia and 1.1 grams of methamphetamine. The driver was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance.
