A pair of 18-year-old carjackers are behind bars after leading authorities on a chase from Fremont’s Mission San Jose neighborhood to Union Landing, police said.
According to a press release from the Fremont police department, officers received a report of a carjacking on Curtner Road at about 12:45 p.m. Two suspects stole a gold Mercedes S420 and fled down Mission Boulevard.
Officers responded and set up lookout posts around Fremont. One officer spotted the gold Mercedes heading northbound on I-880 and followed it until it exited off of Alvarado-Niles Road.
The driver refused to stop and led officers into the Union Landing shopping center, police said.
The driver lost control of the Mercedes and crashed into several parked cars, including one that was occupied. A female in the parked vehicle sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to Fremont police.
After the crash, both the driver and passenger fled on foot into the shopping center.
After a short chase, officers arrested an 18-year-old Oakland woman.
The second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Cornelius Smith, was apprehended shortly after with the help of witnesses, according to the Fremont Police Department.
Both Smith and the woman were arrested on suspicion of felony carjacking. The woman also faces an additional charge of felony hit-and-run, according to police.
As of 9:50 p.m., police had not identified the female suspect.
