The incident prompted a three-hour SWAT standoff.

Updated, Wednesday 2:05 p.m.

A man was arrested after he chased his father with a knife and threatened to kill him, Newark police said.

Arthur Paco, 23, of Newark was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making terrorist threats, according to a press release issued by the Newark Police Department.

Police were called to the area of Olive Street and Thornton Avenue after they received a call that a man was chasing another man to the with a knife.

The victim told authorities that the person who had chased him was his son and that he had barricaded himself back at their home on Olive Street, police said.

Newark Cmdr. Renny Lawson said Newark police sought help from neighboring police departments when the man barricaded himself in the home as a precaution.

But the man was detained without incident after police contacted him by telephone when the Newark Police Department Hostage Negotiation Team made contact with him.

No injuries were reported.

The man, who was shirtless and wearing jeans, sat handcuffed at the Shell Gas Station around 1:05 p.m. and was escorted into a patrol car shortly after.

Several law enforcement teams from various agencies including Newark Police Department, Union City Police Department, Fremont Police Department and the California Highway Patrol are on scene. Medical personnel also are on standby.

While there were no mandatory evacuations, some neighboring residents did leave the area voluntarily, Lawson said. The area was cleared by 2 p.m.

Two SWAT team members entered my mom's house on Tudor. They used her ladder to go over the fence on one side and broke a slat of the fence on the other.

james:Newark has a police scanner??
James Nelson June 21, 2012 at 05:06 AM
Melissa, You can Obtain a Police Scanner from anywhere whether from a Physical Retailer such as RadioShack or from an Online Seller. As long as it can pick up 800MHZ Frequencies (Alameda County, recently was Re-banded under the 800MHZ Range). There are a Number of Police Scanners you can listen to Online for Free, specifically from Websites such as Radio Reference. Unfortunately Radio Reference lacks a Newark Police Live Feed, but you can usually hear Fire / Medical Incidents via Alameda County Fire's Live Feed.

Thaanks for the information James. You gave me advice on the scanners once before but I wasn't able to shop and I don't like to buy something like that without seeing it. Maybe this time I actually will go to radio Shack and buy one for my husband.
