New Police Resource Center Aims to Deter Crime in 'Four Corners' Area

A new police substation was dedicated Wednesday

Police, city leaders and the public turned out to witness the dedication of the city's new Wednesday.

Located within the Alvarado Plaza Shopping Center in the area commonly known as the Four Corners, the new building was prayed over and annointed with oil before a ceremonial ribbon cutting and tour of the facility.

"This has been a long time coming, but we made it happen," said Union City Mayor Mark Green.

The new center, paid for by redevelopment funds, will serve as a police substation as well as house community activities and educaion programs.

Many of those in attendance were most excited about the new police presence and its projected ability to deter crime in an area that's seen many petty criminals running amok.

"This is something the community has been waiting for a long time," said former Union City Police Officer and Union Sanitary District Board of Director's Member Manny Fernandez. "There's been a lot of bad activity here — not big crime — just a lot of young hooligans and loiterers."

"It means a lot to this side of town," agreed City Council Member Pat D. Gacoscos, "especially for businesses who've seen a lot of loiterers and snatchers."

Police say crime has been down but that the sight of police cars and the presence of positive new community activity at the new center will deter criminals further.

The new center is located at 31880 Alvarado Blvd.
