Update: Two-Alarm House Fire Displaces Family

The fire damaged the home's garage and roof.

Updated Saturday, 7 p.m.

A two-alarm fire in the garage of a single-family home in Newark displaced a family and caused more than $175,000 in damage, according to Alameda County fire officials.

The fire on the 35000 block of Severn Drive was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m., Division Chief Andy Smith said.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found the garage and attic of the single-family home fully involved in flames, Smith said.

The fire was brought under control in less than 25 minutes, but it destroyed the garage and roof and caused heavy smoke and water damage inside the home. Smith estimated damage at around $175,000 to $200,000.

The occupants of the home were already outside when firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.

The occupants were displaced, and are working with their insurance company to find temporary lodging, Smith said.

I'm glad everyone got out safely, and would also like to know how we can help. A serious question James, -how can solar panels cause fire and what could be done to prevent it?

The type of roof they had didn't help either. It was those old wooden shakes. That's what was heard popping off and up into the air. That's the worst roofing for fire. Lots of fuel.

Props to the Alameda County Fire and Newark Police. They helped contain the fire and not let it get to any other houses other than flying embers...

Anyone know what caused the fire? Looks like it started in the garage.
