Five Teens Arrested After Fight at Newark Memorial

Police said officers responded because a large crowd began getting involved in the fight.

Five minors were arrested Wednesday morning after police officers responded to to a report of a fight, police said.

Acting Sgt. David Lee said police officers arrived to the high school campus mid-morning and found a number of female teenagers fighting with a larger crowd getting involved.

All Newark police units on duty responded to the high school to address the growing crowd, said Lee, who added that the crowd had begun surrounding the officers.

The Argus reported that Superintendent Dave Marken said the fight stemmed from a conflict the girls, who were between the ages of 15 and 16, had over a boy and that all five have been suspended. The Argus also noted that police officials said the fight had no connection to the recent killing high school senior Osana Futi. Visit The Argus to read its full report.

All of the juveniles who were found fighting were arrested by Newark police and are likely to face charges but the incident is still under investigation, Lee added. Police had cleared the area by around 10:45 a.m.

I am glad that Jenny left her comment. I agree with her and I am sharing with you a parent's viewpoint. NMHS is a great place full of wonderful students. I am tired of seeing our school raked through the mud because of the actions of a few bad apples. We need to stand up for our kids and celebrate what incredible adults they are preparing to become. We need to stop cutting them down and begin building them up.

Miss Hemphill, I am truly enjoying reading your posts, and generally agree with much of what you are stating. Your opinions might be divergent in the minds of most, but they are certainly cogent, well thought out, and, irregardless of criticism towards you, very interesting. Please keep posting, for I find your wit and sarcasm refreshing. I was one who early on posted against the use of drug dogs on our campuses. The majority of our high school kids are doing just fine and should be treated with the respect they deserve. The proverbial " bad apples" should be handled accordingly. Visit the campus, folks, and see for your self.

Our school is good, we just need to stop worrying about parent lawsuits and use a zero tolerence policy for fighting, drugs, and bullying. Everyone knows who is doing it. Ask any kid who the bullys or dopers are and they all know, and so does the staff, but it takes until we have a death or violent incident before the people in charge open thier deaf ears. Why are we so afraid to take action and make this a better place to live? Maybe if we keep our kids at home for a week after each one of these violent episodes someone will take action. Dogs and metal detectors should be used anywhere there is a safety issue, and we deffenitly have one at our High School. I don't know ONE decent person with a decent child that is against safety, at any cost.
