The checkpoint aims to make streets safer for drivers.

“Each year drivers who are under the influence cause a disproportionately high number of collisions, many of which result in injury or death,” the press release states. “A key objective of the checkpoint is to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on the road, rather than produce a dramatic number of arrests.”

Those arrested for driving while under the influence may be subject to a suspension of driving privileges, fines and jail time.

Union City police encourage those who are drinking to have a designated driver or take a cab.
