Carjacking Suspect Surrenders at Hayward Hotel After Call to Mom

A suspected felon holed up at the Budget Inn in Hayward surrendered to Sheriff's Deputies after a phone call to his mother.

Mom says: Surrender.

What began as a carjacking in Oakland and ended as a standoff at the Budget Inn on Foothill Boulevard in Hayward is over and a suspect en-route to Santa Rita, police said.

The Mercedes-snatching suspect, identified as 30-year-old parolee Sylvester Williams, agreed to surrender to police about three hours after he first holed up in the room of a lady friend in the Budget Inn at 21598 Foothill Blvd.—but not before he called his mom.

"He said he needed to talk to his mother, and we believe he did," said Alameda County Sheriff's Lt. Tom Madigan.

The ordeal began at about 5 a.m., when deputies got the alert of a car jacking of a gray Mercedes SUV in Oakland, allegedly involving the use of a shotgun. They spotted the suspect and gave chase, but Williams pulled into the Budget Inn, rushing to the room of a female acquaintance.

Sheriff's deputies evacuated 30 guests — about a third of the hotel — before initiating contact with Williams, whose lady-friend was away.

The guests were not amused.

"One lady asked me if she could take a shower before she came out, but we told her to just come out," Madigan said.

After chatting with his mother, Williams surrendered and was interviewed by police before being transported to Santa Rita Jail.
