Update: Newark Man Killed in Bicycle Crash Near Fremont

John Pickens, 66, of Newark, was killed Saturday afternoon after crashing into a rock near Fremont.

A bicyclist who died Saturday after crashing into a rock near Fremont has been identified as 66-year-old John Pickens, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The California Highway Patrol received a report of a cyclist down in the roadway near the intersection of Palomares and Niles Canyon Road in a rural area of Alameda County near Fremont.

Pickens, a Newark resident, died from his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.

According to the Fremont Argus, Pickens has been a Newark resident since 1976 and is survived by his wife, Melinda Pickens, three children and four grandchildren.

The Fremont Argus also reported that Pickens was a "distingushed engineer" for Cisco Systems.

A memorial date has not yet been set, according to the Argus. Read the full report from the Argus here.

David, I did not see it happen but there was a Mailman who witnessed the whole thing . He drove back after 10 to 15 minutes and claimed he saw John fall on the side of the road. He left before the Police and Paramedics showed up. Are you related to John?

Yes Tony, He is my brother. Thank you for trying to help him !!!!!!! We had lost another brother, Eric, in Salt Lake, Utah, 2 weeks ago from a bike crash also. Last week, Dec 1st we were all at Eric's memorial together. This was the last time I got to see John.

Brother Johns Memorial will be Sat 12-22-12 @ 4 p.m. Location is to be determined. Maybe in Newark, or near there. (?)
