An armed gunman was shot and killed during an incident with police officers Saturday night, UCPD announced Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at about 10 p.m. when two patrol officers were trying to conduct a traffic stop on Dyer Street south of Meteor Way.
According to Cmdr. Ben Horner of the UCPD, the driver of the vehicle fled on foot and officers gave chase.
The suspect refused to follow the officers' commands and reached into his waistband, pulling out a handgun, Horner said.
The suspect then pointed the gun at the officers, according to Horner.
"In defense of their lives officers fired their weapons shooting the suspect several times," Horner wrote in a press release.
A loaded handgun was found at the scene, police said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital via ambulance where he was pronounced dead shortly after, according to police.
The Alameda County Coroner's Office has not yet released the suspect's identity, police said Sunday morning.
The two officers involved in the shooting were put on administrative leave, per department policy.
The Union City Police Department and Alameda County District Attorney's Office will investigate the incident.
Multiple readers reported hearing the gunshots, followed immediately by sirens, shortly after the incident. Readers told Patch that the incident occurred very close to St. Anne's Church and that officers blocked off a portion of Dyer Street between Regents Drive and Meteor Way.
