A man was arrested on suspicion of stabbing his stepfather in Newark on Sunday afternoon after an argument over a stray cat, according to police.

Officers responded to a report of a stabbing in the block of 36700 Munyan Street around 12:20 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Arriving officers found a 63-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his face and neck, according to police. The suspect, later identified as 46-year-old James Severa, exited the home as officers arrived and was taken into custody, police said.

Severa confessed to stabbing his stepfather with a large kitchen knife, according to police. Severa told officers they were in the middle of an argument about a stray cat Severa supposedly adopted and his stepfather threatened to kill the pet, police said.

The victim was transported a hospital for wounds that were not considered life-threatening, according to police. Severa was booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted murder.

I'm thinking that their issues run deeper than the cat.

Wasn't this the same picture of the guy who was stopped for a traffic violation, and had a collapsible baton on him? If not, it's his twin brother.

Poor guy was just protecting his cat. I would do the same thing to anyone trying to kill my cat. The attempted murder bit is BS on this one. Sometimes protecting a life takes extreme measures.
