AC Transit Bus Catches Fire on I-880 S: Local Resident, Girlfriend Stop to Help

A couple was able to help a bus driver calm down after her bus went up in flames on I-880 southbound.

Union City resident, Silaiman Habib, and girlfriend, Patricia Almaraz, were able to help an AC Transit bus driver while her bus went up in flames around midnight on I-880 south.

Driving back from San Francisco, the couple noticed a bus pull over to side with smoke coming out from the bottom. They saw a person, which happened to be the driver, outside of the bus bending over. Almaraz went to see if she was okay, by then, the bus started going up in flames.

“I’m assuming other drivers drove past and called 911,” says Habib. “I called and they said they were informed and they were on their way”.

By the time firefighters arrived, both sides of the bus were in flames.

“One other car pulled over and took pictures and left in a couple minutes,” says Habib. “We stayed till the fire department started to hose it [the bus] down, but the cops were signaling us to leave the area. We drove away soon after”.
