73-Year-Old Musician Attacked After Dedicating Song to Trayvon Martin at Hayward Blues Festival

A legendary musician was physically attacked Saturday night after dedicating a song to Trayvon Martin at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival, according to KTVU

Lester Chambers, 73, a member of the 60s group The Chambers Brothers, was assaulted around 5 p.m. after he dedicated Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” to the slain Florida teen, the news station reports.

The suspect, Dinalynn Andrews Potter, 43, of Barstow, allegedly shoved Chambers to the ground and attacked him. Chambers was transported to a local hospital and released, and is recovering at his Petaluma home.

According to KTVU, Chambers’ son, Dylan, took to Facebook where he posted a photo of Chambers and noted that he suffered “a bruised rib muscle and nerve damage and he is sore all over.”

Andrews Potter was detained by officers and arrested on suspicions of battery. She was cited and released, KTVU reports.

Chambers’ family is asking that Andrews Potter be also charged with a hate crime.

The assault occurred after racial tensions flared with news of Florida resident George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the murder case of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, which sparked protests through out the nation, including the Bay Area.
