Union City Students to Hold 'Project Haiyan' Fundraiser Friday

All proceeds will go to communities in need in the Philippines via the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns.

Local student groups are doing their part to send aide to the Philippines, which was severely devastated by Typhoon Haiyan earlier this month.

According to the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns, multiple New Haven schools are holding donation drives throughout the week for the survivors of the typhoon.

The initiative, Project Haiyan, is being spearheaded by the Filipino Heritage Studies class at James Logan High School with support from the New Haven Pilipino American Society for Education, along with community groups Filipino Advocates for Justice and Kaisahan.

The event will include food, performances, martial arts demonstrations, clothing vendors and more. All proceeds will go toward NAFCON’s efforts to provide relief to typhoon victims in the Philippines.

The event is free but monetary donations are encouraged.

Filipino Advocates for Justice will also be hosting a booth to receive various donations. Non-perishable food items, bottled water, towels and blankets are among the desired items list, according to NAFCON.

Typhoon Haiyan is one of the most powerful storms ever to hit land.

About 4,000 deaths have been confirmed since the typhoon struck on Nov. 8 with at least 1,600 still unaccounted for. More than 13 million have been impacted by the typhoon, NPR reported Tuesday.

Those who can’t attend the event but wish to contribute are encouraged to make donations online via NAFCON here.
