Union City Native to Appear on Arsenio Hall Show Tonight

Logan grad and spoken word artist Prentice Powell is a featured guest on the show, which airs tonight at 11 p.m. on CW.

James Logan High School alumnus and spoken word artist Prentice Powell will be a featured guest on the Arsenio Hall tonight, Dec. 18. 

The segment is scheduled to air locally at 11 p.m. on CW channel 12, according to Comcast TV Listings.

A former forensics student, Powell uses poetry to speak on issues of race, social justice and fatherhood, often challenging stereotypes of black men.

“If you can’t brag about how many women you have or the $200 denim on your butt, you are worthless … And as long as your kids have Jordans on their feet it’s okay if they have to eat Top Ramen for a week,” Powell says mimicking a robot in his breakout poem, “The System” (see video above).

Powell’s powerful messages have earned him accolades across the nation.

According to his online bio, Powell was named the Best Poet  by the East Bay Express in 2010, as well as 2007 Spoken Word Artist of the Year at the Black Music Awards. He’s performed on stages in London, Amsterdam and South Africa and has shared stages with Goapele and Stevie Wonder.

Powell will appear on the Arsenio Hall Show tonight alongside filmmaker Kevin Smith (ClerksJay and Silent Bob Strike Back), legendary boxer Bernard Hopkins and the cast of Single Ladies.
