Tuesday, July 12

, a class of 2009 Logan graduate, made his professional debut last week playing for the Washington state-based Tri-City Dust Devils, a minor league farm team for the Colorado Rockies. Padilla was drafted last month by the MLB team. 

The Alameda County Fire Department and the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency are teaming up to add five , including one in Union City. The project is still in the idea phase. While the county will provide the staff, cities would have to incur the costs of construction, which the City of Union City finance manager said the city would not be able to afford.

The state Senate Labor Committee approved AB 889, the . The bill will now be heard before the appropriations committee. The bill would grant domestic workers basic labor rights and protections that employees in other fields in the state already have. The issue is particularly relevant to Union City's Filipino population. According to the Filipino Advocates for Justice in Union City, a large number of Filipino immigrants are in-home health care workers.

Also on Tuesday, the California State University Board of Trustees approved .

Wednesday, July 13

City Council requested a more detailed report on the cost of converting a former fire station into a proper community center. The former fire station is currently known as the 10th Street Community Center, which is home to a popular boxing program. However, the building is a surplus property to be sold in the future. Community members are asking it be a permanent community center. A more detailed report will be presented at the Aug. 23 meeting, when City Council will vote on the matter. Read the full report .

Videographer Ken Guanga took us inside the 61st Annual Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute Open Karate Tournament. It was the first time the international event was held in Union City. It featured a tournament, as well as a seminar in which Jeff Macalolooy, founder of Dragons Den in Union City, gave lessons. Learn more about the event in our video .

The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved . Union City remains intact in the map, with the biggest shift in Pleasanton.

Thursday, July 14

The plea hearing for three suspects arrested in connection with a 2008 murder at Kennedy Park was delayed to July 28. All of the suspects were teenagers at the time of the alleged shooting. Two of them have past criminal charges, including one who is part of an active attempted murder case. Read the full story .

Friday, July 15

Patch contributor Francis Ramos visited the giddy moviegoers who lined up for the midnight premiere of the latest and final Harry Potter film. At the front of the line was a group of friends who camped out more than 25 hours in advance to get the best seats in the theater. See the full photo gallery and story .

The bill, inspired by the case of missing child Caylee Anthony in Florida, would require legal guardians to notify police within 24 hours about the disappearance of children under 14.
