Monday, July 25

Lamar Lomack, the 18-year-old who allegedly shot at police officers during a burglary investigation on July 21, was arraigned in court and charged with attempted murder on a police officer, two counts of assault with a firearm on a police officer and four counts of child endangerment. According to the district attorney's office, a friend of Lomack's was being chased by officers. The friend, Christopher Gaines, ran into Lomack's home and Lomack took it upon himself to fire at the officers, authorities said. His motive is unknown. Read the full story .

A new report measuring the walkability of cities ranks Union City as "." The study, prepared by Walk Score, shows that a majority of residents live in car-dependent neighborhoods, with only 15 percent of Union City residents living near areas where most errands can be taken care of on foot.

Wednesday, July 27

The District 45 Big League All-Stars — made up of the top 16- to 18-year-old players from teams in San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Hayward and Union City — , the world championship for Little League’s highest age level held in Easley, South Carolina. Unfortunately, the boys lost their first game 3-4 against the Southwest all-star team on Wednesday, and lost narrowly again on Thursday 11-12 against the East all-stars.

AC Transit announed it will . The basic adult fare will increase by 10 cents to $2.10. The fare for youth, seniors and persons with disabilities will increase by 5 cents to $1.05. The monthly pass will go up only for youth, from $15 to $20. The AC Transit fares will not affect UC Transit fares in any way, a UC Transit manager said.

Thursday, July 28

At a rally in Hayward marking two months since the disappearance of Michelle Le, a Hayward police spokesperson said the investigation for the missing nursing student is the "No. 1 priority" for police. The rally was attended by more than 100 people who took to the streets with posters, signs and pictures of Le and marched around the Hayward Kaiser Hospital, where she was last seen May 27. Professional soccer players from the San Jose Earthquakes held a training session for youth at Shorty Garcia Park. Children ages 6 to 12 ran through drills and learned tips from the pros. Check out the highlights in our photo gallery .

Friday, July 29

Caltrans hosted an interactive "map" meeting to allow community members to preview its work along State Route 84 in Niles Canyon. New redistricting maps released Friday for State Assembly shows Bob Wieckowski's district broken up. Union City and a northern part of Fremont along with San Lorenzo and slivers of Castro Valley and San Leandro would join the 18th Assembly District, currently represented by Rep. Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward), who will be termed out in 2012. That's good news for Union City Mayor Mark Green, who said he's "strongly considering" running for the assembly seat. Read the full story .

The new maps also show our . While Union City remains intact, there are some big changes for the district itself. Currently represented by Congressman Pete Stark, a Fremont Democrat, the new district would separate Union City from Fremont and Newark, which shift south, and pick up more of San Leandro, Castro Valley and Pleasanton, along with all of Dublin and Livermore and a portion of San Ramon.
