An attorney representing the families of black Union City youth claiming NHUSD failed to protect them from Latino gangs announced that a settlement of $725,000 had been reached during a press conference at the NAACP offices in Hayward. Meanwhile, the school district said the agreement was not final and that the announcement was "premature." The suit stems from the 2007 killing of 14-year-old Vernon Eddins, who was shot and killed in broad daylight at Barnard-White Middle School. The plaintiffs have also filed a suit against the city.
