Police Log: Armed Robbery at Petco, Hundreds of Marijuana Plants Found Inside a Home

This week's police log includes reports of an armed robbery at a Union Landing pet supply store and more than 500 marijuana plants found inside a Chesapeake Drive home, among others.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the and posted on the City of Union City website. The document contains only items of note. Dated Aug. 26, the log contains incidents that occurred from Aug. 19 to 24. Reports have been edited for Patch style.

Friday, Aug. 19

Loaded gun, marijuana found in vehicle that ran stop sign

Three people were arrested on suspicion of a loaded handgun, possession of stolen property and possession of marijuana for sale after police stopped a vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign, according to the report. Officers in an unmarked vehicle were conducting special enforcement in the area of Ninth and F streets when they saw a vehicle run a stop sign. Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver failed to stop, the report said. When the driver eventually stopped, one of the three passengers refused to comply with the officers’ orders to show her hands, and the passengers had to be taken at gunpoint. Police searched the vehicle and found a loaded .45 caliber handgun, along with evidence of marijuana sales, according to the report.

Stray bullet hits Union Square apartment

Later on Friday night, officers responded to the Avalon apartments at 34 Union Square to investigate a report of shots fired in the area. According to the report, as officers were en route, a resident informed a police dispatcher that a bullet had struck his apartment but that no one had been injured. Officers were unable to locate any victims or suspects in the area/

Sunday, Aug. 21

Armed robbery at Petco

An armed robber made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after holding up employees Sunday night, according to the report. During the evening, officers responded the Petco store in Union Landing to investigate a just-occurred armed robbery. Through the investigation, officers learned that an armed suspect entered the pet food store and demanded money from the safe. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate any suspects.

Three arrested after family dispute

Also on Sunday night, officers responded to a home on Panama Circle to investigate a report of gunshots heard at the residence. Officers surrounded the home and ordered the occupants to come out. Once the area was secure, the investigator learned that the family was involved in a heated domestic dispute, the report said. During the argument, one of the family members broke a window, which was mistaken for a gunshot. According to the report, two of the occupants were believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance and arrested. A third occupant had a felony arrest warrant and was also arrested, the report said.

Monday, Aug. 22

More than 500 marijuana plants seized

Members of the Union City Police Department and the Major Crimes Task Force served a search warrant at a home on Chesapeake Drive. When officers announced their presence, a suspect inside the home tried to run out of the back door, the report said. The suspect eventually gave up when confronted by an officer and a police dog in the back yard. According to the report, officers found between 500 and 600 inside the house.

Tuesday, Aug. 23

Teen injured in early morning shooting

A teenage boy was shot in the leg during an early morning shooting in the area of Sixth and D streets. Officers responded to numerous reports of gunshots being heard, the report said. As arriving officers were investigating the incident, they learned that a teenager with a gunshot wound had check into a local hospital. Officers responded to the hospital and interviewed the victim. They learned that he was riding his bike in the area when an unknown suspect, or suspects, shot at him for no reason, the report said. The investigation is ongoing. Wednesday, Aug. 24

Two arrested in Decoto SWAT search

Police arrested a 19-year-old Union City man and a minor during a SWAT search. Starting at 7 a.m., SWAT officers from Union City, with assistance from multiple agencies, searched two homes in the Decoto neighborhood in the area of the 700 block of E Street and the 33500 block of Seventh Street. The search was a follow-up to a daytime shooting that left one man injured and eight suspects in custody on July 28. Read a more detailed report on Union City Patch .
