1. PURPLE LOTUS COMMUNITY FAIR

Where/When: Purple Lotus Buddhist Temple, 33615 9th St, Union City, CA; Saturday, May 5, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Why Go: In addition to a photo booth (free), the event features food booths (Mexican/Asian/ American), beverages, games, and arts & crafts. Children can also have fun with FREE face painting, personalized art, and martial arts classes. Enter to win $500, an iPad 2, and Disneyland Park-hopper tickets.

2. NATIONAL SCRAPBOOK DAY

Where/When: Our Paper Place, 5857 Jarvis Ave, Newark, CA; Sunday, May 6, 10:00 am - 10:00 pm

Why Go: Enjoy food (dinner and snacks), drinks, and a "swag bag" filled with scrapbook related items and merchandise.

Price: $40

3. FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

Where/When: Comic and Figure Addicts, 3902 Smith St, Union City, CA; 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Why Go: Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE (quantities are limited per person) to anyone who comes into their stores. There will also be a sale on everything else in the store that day, as well as other giveaways and raffles.

4. NEWPARK MALL CELEBRRATES CINCO DE MAYO

Where/When: NewPark Mall Center Court, 2086 NewPark Mall, Newark, CA; Saturday, May 5, 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Why Go:  This event will be a celebration of Mexican heritage. There will be live entertainment in the center court, including a band and dancers performing traditional Mexican dances. Enjoy free craft activities for the kids and spin the prize wheel for a chance to win a gift card and other prizes.

5. 2012 RACE TO SAVE STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Where/When: Cesar Chavez Middle School, 2801 Hop Ranch Rd, Union City, CA; 9:00 am

Why Go: This race raises funds for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at all NHUSD schools.  There are both five-kilometer and 10-kilometer races and registration begins at 8:00 am. The kids' race will begin at 10:30 am. This event is appropriate for families as well as serious runners.
