Update: 6-Year-Old Killed in Pit Bull Mauling Identified

A pit bull attacked and killed a 6-year-old boy in Union City on Monday.

The attack happened at a home on Elizabeth Way at around 11:30 a.m., according to the Union City Police Department.

The boy, identified as Nephi Selu, of Dixon, was staying with relatives in Union City for an extended period of time.

Police said he was playing with the family dog and other relatives in the backyard and may have tried to climb on to the dog’s back.

The dog attacked Nephi and bit the top of his head.

Emergency crews transported him to the Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto for treatment.

He died from his injuries at about 4 p.m., police said.

The dog was taken to the Tri-City Animal Shelter where he is being held for a routine 10-day quarantine. Police said the dog’s owner was distraught but cooperative. The owner told police that the dog had never bit anyone in the past.
