Bike Lanes to Be Added Along Union City Boulevard Corridor

Pavement widening for the addition of bike lanes begins this week along Union City Boulevard between Smith Street and Alvarado Boulevard.

Road improvements along Union City Boulevard are scheduled to begin this week.

Among the first phase of roadwork along the Union City Boulevard Corridor is the addition of bike lanes.

According to the City of Union City, crews will start this week to widen the pavement along Union City Boulevard in the area between Smith Street and approximately 700 feet south of Alvarado Boulevard.

The project will require lanes to be closed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A 25-mph work zone speed limit will also be enforced for public safety.

The project is expected to be completed in December, city staff said.

During construction, the Union City Boulevard median will be reduced to allow the lanes to be widened. The pavement will be slurry sealed and restriped in order to add the new bike lanes, according to the city.

The City of Union City plans to continue installing bike lanes along Union City Boulevard from this project area south to the Union City city limit at Fremont. When those future phases will occur has not yet been determined as funding has not yet been allocated, according to city staff.

This is great news! I'm looking forward to the completion of bike lanes along the whole length of UC Blvd. when the later phase(s) get funded.

Fantastic news! I remember when the medians went in 10+ years ago. . .would've saved the city time and money if the bike lanes went in originally. . .the medians seems like such a waste!
