Fremont Man, 71, Identified as Bicyclist Found Dead on Trail Last Week

A bicyclist who died following an accident along the Alameda Creek Trail in Fremont was identified this week as So Liu, 71, of Fremont.

Bay City News Serviceβ€”A man who died in a bike accident on an East Bay trail last week has been identified as 71-year-old So Liu, park police said.

Liu, a Fremont resident, appeared to have been riding his bike on the paved Alameda Creek Regional Trail last Tuesday before 12:50 p.m. when his bike struck a raised curb, East Bay Regional Park District police Sgt. Tyrone Davis said.

Liu then fell into the rocks along a canal, suffering a spinal fracture and broken vertebrae in his neck. He died from his injuries after other bicyclists on the trail saw Liu unresponsive on the trail and performed CPR and called the police to send him to the hospital, Davis said.

Liu appeared to be biking alone, while wearing a helmet but not biking clothes. No one witnessed the crash, Davis said.

Liu's family had been out of town when his body was identified using his fingerprints on Friday. Family members were ready to make a missing persons report when they were told about his accidental death, Davis said.

According to Davis, the coroner said Liu did have some heart issues, but it is uncertain if that is what caused the accident.

Davis said that in his six years working investigations, he had not seen other bike crashes at this part of the trail.
