Photo Gallery: Mowry East Looks Tired

The parking lot between Sherwin Williams Paint and Planet Fitness was empty last Friday afternoon. Do you shop Mowry East? Why or why not. What would bring you back?

Last Friday the section of the Mowry East Shopping Center that butts up against Interstate 880 was all but deserted.

There was some traffic at the Indian grocery store.

A few patrons exercised at Planet Fitness, while others entered the City Sports storefront to inquire about the new gym taking form in the plaza.

Will a new gym give this plaza more pep?

This was once a thriving locale, home to Cost Plus (now at Fremont Hub), Aaron Brothers Framing, Market Broiler (now at Pacific Commons) and other stores.

Now it's a great place to skateboard, play touch football or line up for soccer.

Do you shop at Mowry East? Why or why not? What would bring you back?

Haven't been in that shopping center for a couple of years since Cost Plus moved out. There are no stores there to which I want to shop. Too bad - this is the way it is ALL OVER FREMONT! Our city planners are not good at their jobs of planning our city shopping centers.

What other shopping centers would you say are also suffering the most? I've noticed the Fremont Hub has it's ups and downs but the parking lot is usually bustling with activity.

It's a great location to be redeveloped but planning is only part of the issue. Fremont has the average household income needed for a new center but if people continue to shop outside of the city and online and only want a nice place to walk around, development is never going to happen. Fremont residents have to pay to play, buying a soda and some cheap housewares isn't going to entice a developer. On a related note, this is why I think Barnes and Noble hasn't returned to Fremont, honestly people just loitered there sipping their Starbucks. So, my advice, if people want to walk around a place with books and not buy anything then they should go to the library.

What a great idea, comrealest! The city could open a coffe bar at the library and that would help offset the cost to run the place. We won't have to worry about losing our library anymore!

Thanks Tamerlane, I think part of the issue that the library is run by the county.
