Is This Offensive?

A reader submitted photo shows Asian and Middle Eastern food sharing the same aisle with pet food at Lucky Supermarket in Union Landing.

A Union City Patch reader shopping at the in Union Landing spotted something in aisle 13 that just didn't seem right to her.

Look at the photo above.

"This is rude," the reader said. "Why mix Asian and Middle Eastern food with the pet aisle?"

While I don't usually spew my personal beliefs here, this is a little demeaning. I'm sure there are other items you can toss next to the dog chow. At least Safeway keeps the "ethnic" food in one aisle.

Does anyone else find this a little offensive? Or am I just too sensitive? Tell us in the comments section below.

This is rude, i normally dont post items but as soon as I saw this i was shock. I feel a pet isle should be created for pets and not mixed with foods of culture.
Mpho March 2, 2012 at 06:37 pm
This is definitely offensive. They should pay more attention into what they are doing.
Tim March 2, 2012 at 06:40 pm
Get over yourself... it wasn't done that way to be offensive. They don't need an entire aisle dedicated to either pet food or "foods of culture". Its all dry goods. They aren't going to put it the produce section or the dairy or frozen foods section. Anyway, food is food... why does there need to be food dedicated to cater to one or two specific cultures anyway? Where the italian food aisle? The irish food aisle? If you don't like it go shop at a store that caters to your specific tastes.
Tim March 2, 2012 at 06:43 pm
Perhaps they should put those foods in the baby needs aisle with the diapers.... you could satisfy two of your specific needs at once.
Davis March 2, 2012 at 06:56 pm
I think that the fact that Lucky would offer "foods of culture" would be appreciated. We used to have an Alpha Beta and a Lucky's at Alvarado and Dyer. Those two locations are dedicated to "foods of culture" Go there. I don't think there was any malice intented. Go talk to the Manager instead of playing your "card" on this blog.
TTFN March 2, 2012 at 07:13 pm
Only since you asked: You're too sensitive. I'd more concerned that they put the food on aisle 13
TTFN March 2, 2012 at 07:23 pm
This "Political Correctness" crap is leading to downfall modern society. I guarantee that whatever you say, you will offend someone! It’s just a sign to help you find products; would you be happier with no signs at all? I suspect not – you’d likely complain about that. If you are really bugged, say something to Lucky – why bring it here. Go grow a pair, walk in the store and express you opinion to the manager. Don’t be a weakling and expect us to this for you.
Davis March 2, 2012 at 07:31 pm
Has anyone confirmed this sign? looks Photoshopped to me
Tina March 2, 2012 at 07:39 pm
Nobody said it was done intentional there was no deliberate thought process in creating this isle. Carry any food but display it in an appropriate isle! If its offensive with some people just move it! But young kids will have a field day with this on their twitter! Just fix the problem and move on with a positive smile!
Jesse March 2, 2012 at 08:48 pm
Something needn't be intentional to be offensive. If the man is offended you should respect his opinion.
"Dry goods." You're kidding, right? What good with a sign like that do? Signs are supposed to help us find things or convey information. Why use signs at all? And sorry Tim, certain cultures do have different or specific dietary interests. At a store level, it all comes down to economics. If having an "Irish" or "Italian" food aisle would help them sell more stuff, you better believe they would do it.
Jesse March 2, 2012 at 08:55 pm
Sorry to correct you, but the *reasons* for (what you call) political correctness are what leads to the downfall of modern society, not political correctness itself.
Things like slavery, racism, bigotry, insensitivity, xenophobia and discrimination. And except for the first, you're a fool if you've convinced yourself these things no longer exist.
TTFN March 2, 2012 at 09:13 pm
Jesse, first of all you do not need to say you are sorry for expressing your opinion (it’s your right). I never said that those things like slavery, racism, bigotry, insensitivity, xenophobia and discrimination don’t exist; they do (including slavery in some parts of the world). Don’t be so paranoid that you read racism, bigotry, insensitivity, xenophobia and discrimination into everything, or you become the racist, bigot, insensitive, xenophobic and discriminatory person.
The bloody sign is just there to help you find things in a store. Don’t assume that just because you don’t like the placement of food on a shelf that there is some sinister purpose. I’d much rather find the food next to dog food as opposed to insecticide. .

It's funny, send it to Jay Leno! Sometimes the little things in life are funny, don't be so sensitive.

“Wow what language seriously pussy? That would be on isle 13 near the pet food department! OH my bad, it’s also near the Middle Eastern and Asian isle as well. Lucky’s does not have a pet food department. Also, go talk to the manger? That should be his job to read his dam signs! He needs to overlook his store and maintain a friendly family shopping atmosphere. Food should be placed on food isle not near dog food. People don’t eat dog food. Its just seems immoral to mix people food with dog food and on top of that it’s rude to other cultures. I am sure it’s a huge oversight that needs to be address but getting angry at other users for imputing their opinion and calling them out its not okay that is just plain being ass coward and saying people don’t read this post, well I read it and found your comment rude but you seem to enjoy getting upset and expressing that people are stupid for putting this on forms. Well this smart person who sent the photo did not think it was stupid! Also, what makes you think someone has not complained already? We really don’t know Lucky side!

If a person lived here for any length of time, they should know that many middle easterner's (particularly those who are practicing muslims) and some asian descendents view dogs in the same manner as they view pigs (as dirty animals and unclean) and would not have them in their home let alone on their property. I can definitely see how this would be offensive to them. I am not middle eastern, asian or muslim, but I am aware of my surroundings and my neighbors and choose to live here because of the diversity and the friendliness of the people. Certainly Lucky Supermarket can change their aisles to put their pet food with paper and miscellaneous goods This action would be neighborly and just common sense.
Marie March 3, 2012 at 03:32 pm
Get over it! Geez, the pet products are at the end of one isle while the international food is at the beginning. Right away people want to call everything offensive. If you don't like it don't shop there.
ohPlease! March 3, 2012 at 03:40 pm
Are you all serious?? There are bigger problems in this world and and in this city to worry about an aisle sign??
Thomas Clarke March 3, 2012 at 04:44 pm
I guess it could be offensive if you are so sensitive as to be concerned about it. If you are offended, you should say something to the person who runs the Lucky. They will respond. If they do not then out them.
I have always been concerned about the fact that women are permitted to shop with men and that pork is not segregated in to its own area. Milk, eggs, gluten and shellfish all intrude and should be separated as the Pentateuch demands for Christians, Jews and Muslims.

Hey Guys,
An aisle is "a passage between shelves of goods in a supermarket or other building". An isle is "an island or a peninsula, especially a small one". We're all obviously Union City school district graduates here (except me... I haven't finished 7th grade).
Davis March 3, 2012 at 05:24 pm
Thanks Emma, you can be a regular on Patch to correct spelling errors. Please keep up the good work in your studies. I went through the Hayward School District and had a secondary education with the United States Marines. It is too bad that you won't be able to vote NO on the parcel tax and also sad that your generation will be strapped with trillions in debt when all of us old guys are checked out.
comrade March 4, 2012 at 02:45 am
I think so too. It put a smile on my face.
comrade March 4, 2012 at 03:22 am
The sign appears to me that the rice and dog food products got mixed up and should be switched. That's why I find it funny. I think it would be appropriate to have the Dog Food, Cat Food, and Pet Needs all on one side of the aisle and the rice should share the shelf with the Asian and Middle Eastern Food.
TTFN March 5, 2012 at 03:33 am
I’m sure if you put the Rice near the Asian Food someone will be upset for stereotyping.
Elias Salsa March 9, 2012 at 05:23 pm
The sign at first glance when pointed out can look offensive, but if you're in the actual store you would see that the foods aren't together at all. The pet food is in the section towards the back of the store and then there is the center aisle, and the human food is in the aisle close to the front of the store. They are completely separated by the center aisle so don't get your panties in a bunch.
Davis March 9, 2012 at 06:55 pm
Thank you Elias for going to the store and seeing the actual set-up. The original posters were probably just looking for another "class action suit".

Some cultures eat dogs; some of my mother's ancestors did so. There was even a form of communion in the Handsome Lake religion that involved eating a white puppy.
Eating dogs in Islam depends on your school of fiqh; for most it is haram; for Maliki fiqh it is technically disliked, not forbidden. There are a number of stores that have other food items on the same aisle as the pet food aisle. I haven't heard complaints about them. I think everyone needs to take a deep breath, step back, and calm down.
Nadja Adolf March 16, 2013 at 06:36 pm
The term for disliked in fiqh is "makruh."
