Fresh & Easy Considers Closing All Stores

The British-owned grocery chain cites lack of profit as a reason for contemplating pulling out of the American market. Fresh & Easy has 19 stores in the Bay Area, including two in Hayward.

Fresh & Easy is going stale.

The grocery chain owned and operated by British supermarket giant Tesco could be shut down due to meager sales, according to company officials.

At this point, all 199 stores in the U.S. — with 19 locations in the Bay Area, including two in Hayward and one in Pleasanton in the East Bay — could be sold, closed or offered up to new partners, Chief Executive Officer Philip Clarke said, as reported by Bloomberg

Many Union City residents shop at the Fresh & Easy located at 31049 Mission Blvd. in Fairway Park where local schools are participating in the "Shop for Schools" fundraising contest. The other Hayward store is located at 19691 Hesperian Blvd. near San Lorenzo.

There were reports last year that the chain was eyeing a location in Fremont, as well.

The "Neighborhood Markets" began rolling out stores in the Bay Area in early 2011, after opening the first Fresh and Easy in Southern California in January of 2007.

Fresh and Easy intended to set themselves apart with relatively small grocery stores, self-service-only check-outs, and variety of prepared meals ready-to-go without preservatives. The stores would also stock imported fare, like British candy bars, baked beans, teas and "biscuits" — or cookies, to Americans.

The aim was to establish a "post-melting-pot" grocery store that "reflected the wide diversity of the U.S. market and U.S. consumers," Fresh & Easy chief executive Tim Mason told the San Francisco Chronicle back in 2010.

However, the special items haven't been enough to draw a significant U.S. customer base, and opting for smaller stores as a way to differentiate the company may have backfired.

Fresh and Easy representatives say that the stores will continue to operate as usual until a decision is made.

Why do you think Fresh & Easy has struggled in the U.S. market? Share your experiences and thoughts in the comments below.

We liked our local F&E until we found we had to supplement shopping trips. They don't carry the brands we like and what they do carry comes in small sizes. We would rather buy in bulk to save and have more selection.

I like the convenience of the stores and most of the products, but the atmosphere to me is off-putting. The lighting is weird, or something. Also, "Fresh" is part of the mane, but I don't get a feeling of freshness about the produce and prepared foods.

if that is the case, quantity, then u should shop at Cosco's.where u may Purchase in Bulk...

The project not a good one for us anyway; what happents next interesting-Irmer I assume is looking for another tenant-for City to see property for only $2.5 million lousy deal; after all, City paid over $6 million for the property-City should have land banked the property tell market improved.

I think they may have mismarketed themselves. In quick glancing at their ads that I get once a week, I never got the Specialty British side nor the deli items without preservatives. These will make me go out of my way to check them out,

I agree with most of the commenting already posted. I never got the "British" store appeal from the lack of proper marketing. I also think they are very poorly located. I don't mind the different brands, changing it up is nice sometimes. The stores are just a bit off too. Can't quite put my finger on it either.

I visit the store one time. I don't know. Weird karma there or something. My husband couldn't get out of there fast enough. He didn't like it there but could quite put the finger on it either. Maybe a store, especially as small as that one, should be just junk food or just speciality of some sort...like health or foriegn. I found very little I was willing to purchase there. I'd like to see a Trader Joes in Union City. In the Union Landing would be terrific!

I enjoy eating the foods I purchase at Fresh and Easy. It is wholesome and free of preservatives. Some of their prepared meals are very delicious. I am not interested in eating prepared meals from any of the big chain grocery stores because they are all frozen and full of sodium and preservatives. I dont really find enough prepared choices that are "Easy" at the specialty markets. Fresh and Easy is more than a grocery store, its a lifestyle. I will miss them if they close :(

THink you mean CostTco. Cosco is a shipping line. Come to think of it, you could by in bulk at Cosco by buying an entire container of something! :)

I have spent more of my grocery dollars at Fresh and Easy than any other market in the past year. I truly love my neighborhood market. The selection isn't always great, but the market is small. It does carry the staples, and some very interesting specialty items. It is convenient, and the employees are wonderful, very helpful. Our community will suffer a great loss if it closes.

Another stupid purchase on city of San leandro part catering to the few, Roosevelt people... Buying up that property.
Another joke buying San leandro hospital that won't keep their emergency services!

Roosevelt people??? North area people would not generally want a Fresh and Easy or the shopping center as planned as a suburban strip center. More likely people that work downtown and want some prepared food and basics at moderate prices.

Lots of end of day waste especially the in store bakery has attributed to the coming demise of Fresh and Easy. Also it's believed they spread too far too fast without doing the math on whether or not there would be a market for some of the stores. Too bad...I really like F&E's premise.

I am a former employee and it is a good store, but not a good workplace. My store was quite profitable, they just didnt do their homework on locations of stores and opened too many, too fast. Employees are overworked and underpaid. No employee discount and no paid holidays.. very un american...oh yea, well not an american company..oh well

if targeting a diverse ethnic consumer group was the target, then new york would have been or should have been a prime target,, not the states that were chosen to focus on.... and as other mention this kiosk like assortment of things, especially in the health and beauty section, just doesn't cut it, no one wants to run to several stores, if they can have it all in one, and marketing totally misfired as presenting it as a UK chic thing, instead it came across as a discount grocery store, and the 'healthy' approach sorely took a major dip as well

I will be sorry to see ours go, I really liked the prepared meals but as many have said I didn't realize they were free of preservatives, etc. that is a great selling point that i am sure would make a difference for some. I am British and was so excited to be going in to buy some home comforts but their selection was very limited, I have a lot more choice at Cost Plus so I guess I will be going back there. What a shame it didn't work out for them.
