It seems hard to believe, but the first 7-Eleven store opened in 1927, meaning the convenience store chain will celebrate its 85th anniversary today.
This is exciting for one reason: free Slurpees for everyone!
As has become the annual tradition, 7-Eleven patrons will be given a free 7.11-ounce Slurpee simply for the asking anytime between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. today in honor of 7-Eleven Day.
The celebration is especially noteworthy because it also marks the 45th anniversary of the creation of the Slurpee itself.
“This year we expect to give away 7 million Slurpee drinks, more than ever before, beating last year’s offer by 2 million," said Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven president and CEO, in a media release on the company's Web site.
The company has also created downloadable birthday attire — tiny bowties, hair bows and two sizes of party hats — for folks who want to dress for the occasion. They can be found at http://www.7-Eleven.com or www.slurpee.com/Rewards.
