Union City Singer Doe Eye's New Video Premiers on MTV.com

Local songstress Maryam Qudus aka Doe Eye appeared on the MTV.com homepage for the release of "Hotel Fire." She performs in San Francisco on Thursday.

Maryam Qudus, aka Doe Eye, just might be the hottest thing to emerge from Union City’s bubbling music scene. The sizzling songstress is burning up MTV’s website.

Qudus’ latest video, “Hotel Fire,” premiered Tuesday on MTV.com with the singer highlighted on the homepage. The Union City native also got a shout out as a featured artist on MTV.com’s Buzzworthy Blog last week, too.

Shot in an abandoned building in San Francisco and directed by Bay Area filmmaker David Dutton, the video finds Qudus wandering the hallways of a seedy hotel. A party erupts, before her smoky refrain of “I'm the darkness, you need to light it” ignites flames, engulfing the building in a blaze.

You’ll see some familiar faces in the video, too, such as Union City artists Laura Ho and Kimberly Ky.

Off of Qudus' Hotel Fire EP, the song itself is a hot number. MTV.com describes it best:

“It's a quick two-and-a-half minutes of rapid-fire drum explosions, dirty creeping bass, and noir-guitar slices over which Qudus hovers like a lovelorn wraith, albeit with more than a few crooning jazz classic records in her collection.”

With the video’s release, Qudus is offering her Facebook fans a special contest offer.

Anyone who shares the music video has a chance of winning a t-shirt, the Hotel Fire EP, her previous Run Run Run EP, and an unreleased remix EP by San Francisco indie stalwart John Vanderslice. Qudus will select three winners, and one lucky person will also get the black gloves she wears in the video.

If you have yet to catch Qudus in concert, you can see her live this Thursday at San Francisco’s Bottom of the Hill with Family of the Year, Psychic Friend and Rin Tin Tiger. Tickets are $12. Doors open at 8 p.m. See concert info here.
