Where Do I Get Sandbags in Union City?

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue through the weekend.

High winds and heavy rain will continue to pound the Bay Area through the weekend. While heavy flooding doesn’t occur often in Union City, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Sandbags are available to Union City residents 24 hours a day at the City Corporation Yard located at 34650 7th St. while supplies last, according to city staff. Residents are limited to five sandbags per household.

The areas most prone to flooding in Union City are along Union City Boulevard and Jean Drive, as well as the “Whipple Extension” in the area of Whipple Road and Bettencourt Way, according to Union City’s communications manager Rhea Serran.

The city also reminds residents to keep their drains clean and free of leaves and debris to ease the flow of water.

Public Works crews will be working to ensure the streets are clear during this week’s storm, Serran said.

Rainfall is expected to continue through Sunday but the winds will die down, meteorologist Diana Henderson said Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected be in the lower 60s this week, Henderson  said.

"It's going to be chilly and uncomfortable," Henderson said. "But  this is not unusual weather for this time of year."

High winds were reported on the San Mateo-Hayward, Richmond-San  Rafael and Bay bridges Wednesday morning.

"General highway conditions get dicier in this type of weather," Henderson said.

Henderson said that flooding of local rivers and streams ould be a concern by the end of the weekend.
