What You Need to Know This Week: West Coast Swing, All About Dads, Start-Up Tech Hub

This week in Union City: learn the West Coast Swing, attend a Father's Day event with dad and get technical at Paddy's Coffee House.

  • Check out what Mother Nature will be bringing to the dinner table this season by visiting the at 3553 Whipple Rd. Vendor booths are located at the entrance to Bldg. B on the medical campus and are open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. year-round. You can find local produce fresh from the farm, florists and food vendors. The market is a project of the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association, which also runs the Saturday market at Old Alvarado-Cesar Chavez Park.
  • Classes begin June 16 for the West Coast Swing, the State of California's official dance, offered by Union City’s Leisure Services. Bring your dance partner (not required, but strongly recommended). The class will be taught at the Ruggieri Senior Center by instructors Earl and Elizabeth Ante.
  • Friday, June 17, is the “All About Dads” event at the UC Clubhouse, hosted by the Leisure Services’ Special Needs Program. From 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., participants will celebrate fantastic fathers by making Father's Day cards, followed by dinner (bring your own side dish) and a movie.   • Tech and entrepreneurial folks from all industries, head to Paddy's on June 18 for the inaugural at , 3900 Smith St. This gathering of like-minded tech folks provides a spot to share knowledge and network. The event will take place the third Saturday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. In the future, owner Paddy Iyer plans to invite guest speakers for this event to talk about trends and movements in the industry.   • The , located one block north of Decoto Road at 33623 Mission Blvd.,  has been providing the city's youth with a place to kick back and participate in activities for decades. Summer activities for middle and high school students will include bicycle repair, screen printing and video production. The "Bike Shop" is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 510-489-5482.
