What You Need to Know This Week: “The Ultimate Battle for Supremacy,” Color Guard Fundraiser, Kaiser Farmers Market

This week is jam-packed with fundraising, skateboarding and much more.

  1. Andre English, the man arrested on suspicion of child molestation after  last week, is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, March 28 at 9 a.m. at the Fremont Hall of Justice. English, 27, was originally scheduled to appear in court on Friday, but his attorney asked for a  delay.
  2. If you're feeling both generous and ravenous on March 28, then head to at Union Landing for a fundraising event for the Alvarado Middle School color guard program. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., 25 percent of the proceeds on dine-in and take-out orders will be donated to the school to help purchase uniforms and equipment for the performing arts program.   3. Check out what Mother Nature will be bringing to the dinner table this season by visiting the at 3553 Whipple Rd. Vendor booths are located at the entrance to Bldg. B on the medical campus and is open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., year-round. You can find local produce fresh from the farm, florists and food vendors. The market is a project of the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association, which also runs the Saturday market at Old Alvarado-Cesar Chavez Park. 
  4. “The Ultimate Battle for Supremacy” takes place on April 2 at the , located behind the police station at 34009 Alvarado-Niles Rd. Tricks will be pulled and skills will be tested during this city-sponsored skateboard competition. Registration opens at 10 a.m., with a $10 entry fee. Competition begins at 11 a.m. with the 11 years and younger category, followed by 12- to 15-year-olds at noon, and then ages 16 and up at 1 p.m. During the semi-final and final rounds of this skill contest, contestants will complete two heats of two-minute runs using any apparatus in the park. The top three competitors will receive prizes. The afternoon will be made complete with prize giveaways and a DJ providing a live soundtrack for the fast-paced action.   5. Any kids feeling the spring fever study slump might want to drop in at the from 3:30 to 5:50 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Volunteer tutors will be on hand to help students in kindergarten through tenth grade with  math, reading or science. Call 510-745-1464, ext.11, for more information.
