What You Need to Know This Week: Tennis, Anyone? Plus Back-to-School Night, Science in the Park

Union City highlights this week include Music Together, tennis lessons, Back-To-School Night, the Farmers' Market and Science In the Park.

  1. Head on over to the Monday morning for , a music and movement curriculum for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their grown-ups. Over the course of 10 sessions, you and your child will explore movement and music through instruments, songs, dance and chants in a comfortable, family-style environment. Classes will take place on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost is $195-$205 for all 10 sessions. For more information, call 510-675-5488. 
  2. Union City Leisure Services is now offering tennis lessons for beginners at , 4525 Dyer St. This session begins today, Sept. 26, from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and runs through Oct. 31. Kids will learn the basics of tennis through activities and games while enhancing their hand-eye coordination and teamwork skills. While this is a beginners' class, there are also classes for intermediate, advanced and semi-private lessons. For more information, call 510-675-5329.
  3. If you have high school-age students, then mark your calendar for Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, for Back-To-School Night at James Logan High School. For parents on the other end of the scholastic spectrum, the district’s  kindergarten classes will hold their Returning-To-Learning evening on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Cabello Student Support Center. Both Back-To-School events begin at 6 p.m. on their respective nights. Visit the New Haven Unified School District website for information. 
  4. Check out what Mother Nature will be bringing to the dinner table this autumn by visiting the at 3553 Whipple Rd. Vendor booths are located at the entrance to Building B on the medical campus and is open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., year-round. You can find local produce fresh from the farm, florists and food vendors. The market is a project of the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association, which also runs the Saturday market at Old Alvarado-Cesar Chavez Park. 
  5. Save Saturday, Oct. 1, for , a “reawakening” of the Union City Science, Earth and Health Festival, an event started in 1997 by Richard Valle, event chairman and CEO of Tri-CED Community Recycling. The festival had a 10-year run, took a break and has been reinvented for 2011 as Science in the Park, a collaborative effort between Union City and Hayward communities, schools and city groups to be held at Alden Oliver Sports Park, 2580 Eden Park Place, on Hesperian Boulevard near the border of Hayward and Union City.
