What You Need to Know This Week: State of Emergency Week, Student Walkout, Save the Bay Day of Service

  1. With state budget negotiations at a standstill and a number of cuts to California public schools pending, the California Teachers Association is declaring a "." Throughout the week, the New Haven Teachers Association will join others across the state for a series of demonstrations and activities. On Monday and Tuesday, teachers will reach out to legislators and parents to inform them of the impact of the cuts to education. On Wednesday evening, the NHTA will partner with the Union City Police Officers Association and Alameda County Firefighters Association for a . The week ends with a rally in San Francisco at Civic Center Plaza from 4 to 6 p.m. while volunteers finish a week-long sit-in at the capitol in Sacramento. See the full story .Β 
  2. At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, students at James Logan High School will hold a peaceful walkout and march from the parking lot to the district headquarters as a response to the failure of Measure B, an emergency funding tax for the school district. A student has also released a self-made video discussing the march and how the failure of Measure B will affect students. Expect a more detailed report, and follow-up, on Union City Patch.
  3. Also on Wednesday, the Union City Library is hosting the workshop. The free session will include a presentation on how college finances work, how families can find financial assistance and how to find a college that fits for their child. The workshop begins at 6 p.m.Β 
  4. Environmentally aware volunteers will take part Saturday in the at the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve from 9 a.m. to noon. The group is working to restore more than 600 acres of wetlands at the land reserve on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in Hayward. Find more information about how you can get involved .
  5. Also on Saturday, children and adults can learn more about flowers and plant their own in take-home pots during the in Hayward. The all-day event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free for age 10 and under.
