What You Need to Know This Week: Relay for Life, Bay Bombs Car Show, Antique Faire

See what's going down in Union City this week.

This week in Union City:

  • Bookworms 65 and over should reserve the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 23, for a trip to the Union City Library. From 1 to 2 p.m., the Senior Book Club will meet to discuss its latest selection, Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. The novel’s title character is a “larger-than-life...retired school teacher and unofficial town crier in a small coastal town in Maine.” A series of stories explores the diverse roles Kitteridge plays in the lives of those around her.   • After skipping the month's first session, the City Council will resume their semi-weekly public meetings Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Among the items on Tuesday's agenda are a fourth quarter budget report and a reading of a resolution to make recycling fees mandatory for multiple-family homes. Art Association of the East Bay President Lilia Reynoso also reports that the city will vote on whether to grant the 10th Street Community Center permanent status as a community center.   • Check out some sweet vintage rides at the on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Kennedy Park. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Union City-based car club will host a community gathering featuring oldies DJs and a performance from the Ollin Anahuac Aztec Dancers. The event will benefit the "Pathways to Success" scholarship program.
  • After months of training, planning, and preparation, it’s finally here — ! During the 24-hour period from 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, to 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, participants will run, walk and even skip around the track at (1800 H St.) as they raise money for the American Cancer Society. The team entry fee is $100. As of press time, 312 people are expected to participate in the day-long movement marathon that has raised $25,428 thus far.   • Don’t forget to head on over to neighboring Niles for the 47th Annual Antique Fair & Flea Market on Sunday, Aug. 28. From 6 a.m. until 4 p.m., more than 200 vendors will sell antiques, collectibles, doodads, tchotchkes, and whats-its during this highly anticipated flea market. There will also be arts, crafts and food throughout the day.
