What You Need to Know This Week: Local Boys Head to Big League World Series, Martial Arts Seminar, Paint Union City Purple

Study under one of Bruce Lee's students, take a free water aerobics class, or paint the town purple — it's all going on in UC this week.

  • A man who police say last Thursday is scheduled to be arraigned today, according to online court records. , 18, of Union City, was arrested July 21 on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a police officer, along with four counts of child endangerment. The shooting resulted in a 15-hour search for Lomack and associates through a quiet west Union Cit neighborhood. Lomack is scheduled for arraignment at the Fremont Hall of Justice at 2 p.m. Another man, Christopher Gaines, 19, was arrested during the search on suspicion of possession of stolen property. He is also scheduled to appear at the Fremont Hall of Justice at 2 p.m.
  • The staff know the health benefits of water-based aerobics and have created a for the community. The first class is free and will be held Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the . Popular music will play as certified swim instructors guide you through a workout on a low-impact underwater dance floor. Participants will receive a great abdominal and core workout, staff said.   • The — made up of the top 16- to 18-year-old players from teams in San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Hayward and Union City — are headed to the Big League Baseball World Series in Easley, South Carolina, held July 27 through Aug. 3. The team won the Western Regional Title and will now play District 5 (Ruston, Louisiana) on July 27, 4 p.m. EST; District 3 (Cumberland, New Jersey) on July 28, 7:30 p.m. EST; and District 9 (Michigan) on July 29, 4 p.m. EST. The final game on Aug. 3 will air on ESPN. Send good vibes to our local boys! Hit 'em hard!
  • Take advantage of the chance to train with one of Bruce Lee's original students, Grand Master Richard Bustillo, during the to be held at Dragons Den MMA, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 30 and 31. Bustillo will be teaching a two-day, four-part, 10-hour seminar covering boxing/Muay Thai; Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's art of choice); jiu-jitsu/submission wrestling; and Eskrima (Filipino martial arts and weapons). The morning session is 9:30-noon  and the afternoon session is 1:30-4. Cost is $95 for both days or $60 per day.   • Join the American Cancer Society at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of Mexico Lindo, 33306 Alvarado Niles Rd., on July 30 and ! During this Relay For Life fundraising event, ACS volunteers will distribute banners, ribbons and signs to everybody then spread out along Alvarado-Niles Road sharing the purple with all that pass by. To further support the upcoming Relay For Life event, have lunch or dinner at Mexico Lindo and 25 percent of your bill will go to the cancer awareness event.
