What You Need to Know This Week: Easter Events, Earth Day, Scholarship Luncheon

A scholarship luncheon featuring a Logan graduate turned Stanford coach, an Earth Day celebration and Easter events take center stage this week on the UC calendar.

  1. Stanford University football coach and James Logan High School alumnus David Shaw will be a special guest Fri., April 22, at the New Haven Schools Foundation’s . Beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the , 32083 Alvarado Niles Rd., this event will honor recipients of the Foundation’s scholarship program for graduating seniors in the New Haven Unified School District. In addition, Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer will help present over 70 scholarships, worth approximately $55,000, to seniors from Logan and Conley-Caraballo High Schools.   2. Hop into spring this Saturday when Union City Leisure Services hosts their annual . Held at the (1333 Decoto Rd.) on April 23 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., this event will include a mini carnival, a Scholastic Book Fair, snack bar, games, raffle prizes and an eggs-ellent hunt.   3. Taking place in conjunction with UCLS’s Spring Egg Hunt Extravaganza is the City of Union City and New York Life Insurance Company's on April 23. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the grounds of the Egg Hunt at the , 1333 Decoto Rd., this free festival will feature complimentary fingerprinting and photos for children’s identification cards, safety information packets with CDs, and gift bags.   4. Get a head start on spring cleaning with at , 34901 Eastin Dr., on April 23 from 9 am to 2 pm. This recycling fundraiser will benefit the Eastin Ecology Club. See event flier for acceptable and non-acceptable items. 
  5. Another option for Saturday is the Earth Day celebration. Join the City of Union City, Washington Hospital and other Tri-Cities organizations at Washington Hospital (2500 Mowry Ave, Fremont, CA 94538) on April 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as they come together to make our community a greener place. The free, all-ages event will feature a number of games and activities for children, along with a number of interactive booths about environmental sustainability, conservation, pollution prevention, waste reduction and more.
