What You Need To Know This Week: Attend Local Memorial Day Events, Sign up for Sports, Meet a UFC Star

Highlights for this week include two Memorial Day events, soccer sign-ups for kids, adult basketball league registration and a meet-and-greet with a UFC star.

  1. Honor those who have paid the ultimate price—their lives—to protect our country by attending the Memorial Day Program at , located on the grounds of the Masonic Home, 34400 Mission Blvd., on May 30. This remembrance service begins at 11:30 a.m. Note that parking is limited, so plan to arrive early. For more information, call 510-441-3719.
  2. Also taking place on Monday is the at Sugar Mill Landing Park on the corner of Alvarado Niles Road and Dyer Street. This annual Memorial Day ceremony is hosted by Michael L. Emerson, founder of the 9/11 memorial and senior vice commander for District 14 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW). The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Families of some individuals lost on Flight 93 will be in attendance. For more information, visit the Flight 93 Memorial website or call 510-247-0777. 
  3. The Union City Youth Soccer League invites the community  Registration starts on June 3 at Mountain Mike’s Pizza at Union Landing from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. All boys and girls ages 4 to 16 are encouraged to sign up for the autumn season.
