Viewfinder: Sketches of a Memory Winter Art Show

Students, seniors, and family members gathered at Union City's Masonic Homes to enjoy an afternoon of art and storytelling.

More than 50 community members came out to see the second Sketches of a Memory art show on Sunday afternoon at The Masonic Home at Union City.

The program, which was founded by Moreau Catholic High School alumnus Janet Ballelos, allows the elderly to participate in storytelling while youths develop their artistic skill. The winter show on Sunday included five senior women from Union City's Masonic Homes of California paired up with 10 artistic students from Moreau Catholic High School.

Each pair of students worked with one senior during a seven-week process. During the first four weeks, the senior participants shared their stories according to the theme of the week: family, love, dreams, or legacy.

The student artists then spent the next three weeks reflecting on what they learned from their senior partner and transferring it into an original art piece, ranging from interpretative dance to black and white photography.

Union City Patch has posted some candid photos to share the program's end results and the overall show experience.
