Video: Newark Mayor Celebrates Birthday

Mayor David Smith turns 66 today.

A fun fact I learned while covering Baskin Robbins' ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday night: As he gets ready to leave the mayor's office (his last day in office is Dec. 8), Smith said he's looking forward to the next chapter in his life.

"I'm on Route 66, and I've got a lot of good company in the car," Smith said Wednesday night.

See the video above to watch locals celebrate Smith's birthday.

As it turns out, we also just spotted him at BJ's Restaurant celebrating this afternoon.

Happy Birthday, mayor!

It's nice to see the mayor celebrating while others are sure to suffer because of the attack on cannabis patients he has spearheaded here in Newark. Here's hoping the unnecessary pain & suffering he's caused is returned to him tenfold in divine retribution. Perhaps when it's his own health that is the issue he won't be preaching the same callous disregard for the legal rights of cannabis patients & the dispensaries that supply their medication. Get on Route 66 & take your old, outdated, antiquated & universally rejected views on marijuana with you to the midwest where you might find one or two inbred morons who share your opinion. Let your legacy be "I tried to save Newark from marijuana, but I failed". It's fitting that Dave knows as little about medicinal cannabis patients, dispensaries & the myriad legal issues involved as he does about how to deal with the public health controversy he created. Goodbye & good ridance !!!

Very well said, Ima, so true, so true. You also forgot to add how out of touch he has been for decades, he does live on an island of all places. The sad reality of Dave leaving office is that his side kick Al is now mayor, which means, nothing is going to change in Newark, nothing.
