This Week: Local Elections, Small Business Seminar, Filipino Independence Festival

See what's happening around town this week.

Here are five things going on this week that you need to know about:

  • Tuesday is election day for the June Primary. For Union City residents, it's the day to vote on the highly debated — the four-year, $180 per parcel tax measure for the New Haven Unified School District. Also on the local ballot is the 20th California State Assembly District primary election. In the race are Union City Mayor Mark Green, who is running as an independent, three democrats — Hayward Councilman Bill Quirk, Hayward resident and Alameda optometrist Jennifer Ong, New Haven Unified School District board member Sarabjit Cheema — and republican Luis Reynoso, a Hayward Unified School District trustee.   • Calling all small business owners! Learn how to manage and grow your business in , Superintendent of Public Works at the City of Union City. The first session will be held Wednesday at the Union City Library. Throughout the series, you'll learn about budgeting, marketing, personnel management, labor relations and more.   • For the first time ever, the Kalayaan Festival will be held in Union City. This Sunday, join hundreds of Bay Area residents for a free daylong celebration of Philippine independence, featuring live entertainment, a fashion parade, comedy and cultural performances, along with celebrity guests Amber Lily, Stella Ruiz and Bernardo Bernardo.
