This Week: Election Day, Standup Comedy, Alzheimer’s Explained

See what's happening in Union City this week.

Heads up! Here are five things going on this week that you should know about:

  • Exercise your right to vote on Tuesday. Registered voters will head to the polls to choose whether to re-elect President Barack Obama or to elect Republican nominee Mitt Romney. But voters will also be asked to vote on local races, measures and state propositions. For more information about those races and measures, click here.   • Business owners, learn how to grow your company and take it to the next level at the free East Bay Small Business Symposium this Thursday at Crowne Plaza Hotel. Held from 7:30 to 11 a.m., the event will feature guest speakers and will provide assistance in developing a business plan for new business owners, how to manage growth for those already established and how to enter new markets for mature businesses.   • Learn about Alzheimer's disease during a special free presentation this Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at AlmaVia of Union City. Led by geriatric physician and Alzheimer's expert Dr. Laurel Coleman, Alzheimer’s Disease: Explored & Explained will allow guests to learn when the right time is to transition a loved one to a care home, learn about the latest research on treatment and prevention, and find out how dementia differs from the normal aging process.   • Enjoy lattes and laughs at Paddy's Standup Showcase this Friday. This week's show, starting at 8:30 p.m., will feature a variety of hilarious local talent with headliner Reggie Steele. Steele was a finalist for NBC’s Stand-Up for Diversity Showcase and was featured on the second season of Martin Lawrence Presents. The comedy show is for mature audiences only.
  • Bring the kids out for a Backyard Bug Hunt at the McConaghy House in Hayward this Saturday. Children will learn about insects while they dig in the dirt and look for creepy crawlies. They'll also make corn husk crickets and crayon rubbings using leaves. Drop in any time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Admission is $2 per child.
