Photo Gallery: Fremont Thai Temple a Hidden Treasure for Food

The Sunday food market at Buddhanusorn Thai Temple in Fremont is a little-known destination for authentic Thai cuisine.

Tucked away in the Niles district is a hidden destination theΒ BuddhanusornΒ Thai Temple. Every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the temple holds a weekend food market, offering authentic Thai cuisine.Β

Food stalls serving freshly cooked Thai dishes are set up outside the temple. Tokens are used as currency in exchange for items. One token equals one dollar, and unused tokens can be exchanged back to dollars. The average price of dishes is about $6.

Run by temple members and volunteers, the market serves as a fundraiser for the temple. The quality of the food, generous portions and low prices are key reasons the market has developed a cult, word-of-mouth following among local residents.

The market offers a wide variety of choices, and it's a great way to try something new. Pad Thai and Thai BBQ are two of the most popular dishes. For dessert, try some mango with sticky rice or a Thai iced tea.

It's a good spot to enjoy a Sunday morning or afternoon. The friendly, quiet and serene atmosphere, along with the delicious Thai food, make for a great combination.

The temple does, however, get crowded. Regular patrons recommend arriving before noon for the best parking and shorter lines. Cars are directed to park in a nearby residential neighborhood.

Although there are tables set up, there are many other spots on the temple's grounds to enjoy. Some even bring picnic blankets and sit on the grass, so come prepared – and hungry.
