Local Hero Honored by Red Cross

Sammy Johnson helped capture a man accused of sexually assaulting a toddler inside of Dollar Tree last December

Sammy Johnson never planned on being a hero.

On Dec. 1 of last year, the Fremont resident walked into the in the Safeway Shopping Center to buy a few small items.

He heard a commotion outside of the store, raced outside and , a 36-year-old Union City man .

Johnson was among several local heroes honored by the American Red Cross at a special ceremony on Wednesday. 

Though the suspect may not have been captured without his help, Johnson doesn't consider himself himself a "real hero."

"The real heroes are those victims that have to go through this every day. We have 15 seconds of fame, but they have to deal with it for the rest of their lives," Johnson said Wednesday.
