Have A Dog Day Afternoon

Stocked with an agility course, watering stations and more, the Drigon Dog Park is the perfect playground for your four-legged friends.

Filled with fake fire hydrants, dog tunnels and a bone-shaped walk with dog paw prints, is a unique setting for canines large and small.

Located at the corner of 7th Street and Mission Boulevard, the gated park is operated by and named after an original Union City Police Department dog.

A fun and safe environment, the park is split into two areas, one for small dogs (29 lbs. or less) and another for larger (over 30 lbs.) dogs. More conveniences for the four-legged friends include watering stations, scooper dispensers and an agility course with jumps, tunnels and a climbing platform.

For us bipeds, the park also features several benches, an awning and plenty of space to chase after our furry friends.

On a warm Sunday afternoon, numerous dog lovers were out with their pets. German shepherds, Chihuahuas, a poodle and other species ran through the grassy enclosure.

First time visitors Brandon and Janise Jones brought their two energetic dogs, Mocha and Remy, who appeared to be having a fine time running loose in the park.

Regular visitors are Blakey and Kermit came with their owners, Mary and Ryan Davis. Ryan brings his pets to Drigon so they can socialize with other dogs. The park is “a great resource for the community,” he said.

The Moreno family – Jazmin, Jessica, Emily and grandmother Erica Barba – supervised their Portuguese water dog Misty-Boy as he dashed around in one small zone.

While dogs rule the land at Drigon, there are still some basic guidelines for pet owners. Owners are required to clean up after their dogs and to control pets to prevent acts of aggression. If an aggressive action occurs, the UCPD needs to be contacted. A full list of rules can be seen at the Union City website.

Drigon Dog Park is open Tuesday through Sunday, except for rainy days. After a rain, the park usually remains closed for 48 to 72 hours.
