1. SANTA CLAUS AT NEWPARK MALL

Where/When: NewPark Mall, Newark; Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: It’s the last weekend before the Christmas holiday. If your children haven't taken photos with Santa yet, this is your last chance at the local mall. As a bonus, all children who visit Santa will get free reindeer antlers.

2. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS AND CANNED FOOD DRIVES

Where/When: Queen Anne Court and Basswood Court in Union City; Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 10:30 p.m.

Why Go: You don't need to go far to see great holiday displays. As many locals know, Queen Anne Court lights up with Christmas cheer every year. The display is also a fundraiser for the Alameda County Food Bank. Similarly, the Tamarack Knolls neighborhood is also inviting the community to check out their Christmas Lights and donate non-perishable food items for the Tri-City Volunteers. The collection barrel is located on Basswood Court, just off of Mission Boulevard and Tamarack Drive.

3. LONGEST NIGHT SERVICE

Where/When: Niles Discovery Church, 255 H St., Fremont; Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Why Go: This Friday is the Winter Solstice, which marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Niles Discovery Church is inviting the community to reflect during this long during a special meditative service. The service is open to anyone seeking a place of solace during the hectic holidays.

4. PURRFECT CAT ADOPTION CLINIC

Where/When: NewPark Mall, Newark; Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

Why Go: Find your purr-fect companion through the Purrfect Cat Rescue cat adoption event.

5. A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Where/When: McConaghy House, 18701 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward; Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Why Go This Victorian-era home will be transformed into a stage for the classic Dickens tale. The audience will move from room to room as actors and musician bring the story to life.
