Ball to Give Special Needs Students an 'Enchanted Evening'

Tonight's Special Education Ball at the Ruggieri Senior Center will give special needs students the chance to attend a 'prom-like evening' together with non-special needs students.

While local special needs students are given their own extra-curricular events and activities throughout the school year, it is rare that they get to attend the same types of events as their non-special needs schoolmates.

One such event would be the traditional annual high school prom.

This year, though, local special needs students will get that chance - tonight, at the , taking place from 5:30-9:30 p.m.Β at the in Union City.

Called "An Enchanted Evening," tonight's ball will provide special needs students with a "prom-like atmosphere" including a dinner catered by Texas Roadhouse and a dance.

The event is also a unique, first-time collaboration between the Union City Leisure Services special needs program and the James Logan High School and American High School special education programs.Β

"What is exceptional about this event is that it is providing the special needs population an event that they may not have attended before, with their non-special needs peers at the high schools that they go to," said Chris Valuckas, recreation supervisor for Union City Leisure Services. "Similar to school proms, the participants will decorate beforehand, they will be in their best prom dress or tux, and they will be taking pictures."
