5 Things You Need to Know This Week: Feb. 7 to Feb. 13

Community-based meetings and Valentine's celebrations abound this week along with Union City Patch's Welcome Party.

  1. Parents will want to head over to the , (32083 Alvarado Niles Rd.), on Feb. 7 for the from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The “Taking Care of Our Kids” committee, chaired by Richard Valle, president/founder of Tri-CED Community Recycling and former Union City council member, was formed to help NHUSD pass a , which will go out for votes in a May special election.   2. Also taking place Feb. 7 is the at (3940 Smith St.), from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Visit to learn more about what the 2011 Relay for Life is and how you can become a team captain or sponsor for the event. Relay for Life of Union City will be held at James Logan High School on Aug. 27 and 28. For more information, call 925-768-0566. 
  3. Don’t be late for a very important date! Feb. 10, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., is the at  (33306 Alvarado Niles Rd.), and everyone is invited. Join the writers and editors behind the site as we celebrate our first four months of providing news and information to local residents. We want to get to know you, and you can learn more about Patch. You can pick up some cool Patch swag and enter our drawing for a gift from a local business, all while enjoying delicious (and complimentary) food and drinks. 
  4. Music lovers should circle Feb. 10 on their calendars, as it marks a assembled by James Logan High School music director Ramiro Barrera and featuring Bay Area professional musicians, along with selected Logan students. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at the James Logan Band & Color Guard website
  5. Celebrate Feb. 14 early on Friday, Feb. 11, with the (32611 Alvarado Blvd.), beginning at 10 p.m. Those 21 years or older are invited to attend this party featuring DJ Johnny Afro mixing the latest hip-hop, R&B and old-school club hits.
