5 Things You Need To Know This Week: Feb. 21–27

This week, the Logan Black Student Union celebrates Black History Month and the Sketches of a Memory Winter Art Show takes place at the Masonic Home.

  1. The City Council meets Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. This week, the council will declare March as Arts Education month as well as review city projects. To see this week's full agenda, click here
  2. The Black Student Union at James Logan High School is inviting community members to during an evening event on Feb. 24. from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Held in The Spot on the Logan campus, 1800 H St., this event will include student performances featuring spoken word, poetry, dance and singing. Refreshments will be served.   3. Curious about how Gov. Jerry Brown's budget will affect you? Attend "," a forum on the California budget Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The event will feature California Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski and special guest Jean Ross, executive director of the California Budget Project.
  4. There is still time to sign your kids up for Art Classes with Young Rembrandts, a special series of classes for Preschool Drawing (ages 3 1/2  to 6), Elementary Drawing (7-13), and Youth Cartoon Drawing (10-15). No prior experience necessary is required for these classes offered by Union City Leisure Services. New lessons taught during each session in each of the three classes; they run through March 26. Register online or call 510-675-5357.
  5. The public is invited to the second annual at the Union City Masonic Homes of California, 34400 Mission Blvd., from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 27.  Sketches of a Memory is a program that allows seniors to participate in storytelling while simultaneously letting youths develop their artistic skill. The show will include five senior women from the Masonic Home who have been paired up with 10 artistic students from Moreau Catholic High School. This event ($1 donation at the door) will include raffles and prizes as well as hors d'oeuvres. Visit the Sketches of Memory website for more information.
