The local singer-songwriter is among 15 bands vying for an opening slot at the Bay Area rock festival, which will be held June 2 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.
We’re not playing favorites, it’s just that local indie rock artist Doe Eye, aka Maryam Qudus, is really doing her thing. Not only is she competing in Billboard’s Battle of the Bands in Las Vegas in just eight days, she’s also in the running to perform on the local band stage during leading Bay Area rock station Live105’s BFD music festival. The June 2 festival will be held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View and will feature artists such as Jane's Addiction, Silversun Pickups, The Naked and Famous, and Angels and Airwaves, among others. Qudus is up against 14 other Bay Area acts vying for a spot on the festival stage. She’s the only artist representing for the often-neglected Tri-Cities music scene. Next month, Qudus will also …

African-American Russell City was once located west of Hesperian Boulevard until it was "redeveloped" in the 1960s.
During the 1940s, when African-American workers moved from the South to work in the shipyards of the San Francisco Bay, one of the places they settled was in an area west of Hesperian Boulevard, then known as Russell City. Home to a diverse mix of residents, including Latino and Filipino immigrants, this area, now part of Hayward, was the center of an active blues music scene — so much so that some consider Russell City to be the birthplace of the West Coast blues style. On April 19, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m., students from San Lorenzo High School will stage a theater documentary, The Russell City Project, a dramatic re-enactment of interviews with former Russell City residents and musicians. During the 1960s, Alameda County turned Russell City …

The local singer-songwriter will compete against five other bands from across the country on May 18 in Las Vegas.
We told you last September to look out for indie-rock artist Doe Eye. Well, it’s a lot more than just Union City residents who’ve been bigging up our local gal. On Tuesday, internationally-respected music magazine Billboard announced that Doe Eye, whose real name is Maryam Qudus, was selected as one of six finalists in their nationwide Battle of the Bands 2012 competition. Qudus will compete head-to-head against five other bands on May 18 during a free showcase in Las Vegas. If she wins, she’ll get to perform at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards on May 20. “I can’t believe it. It hasn’t really processed yet,” Qudus said of the honor. “I never would have thought I would be here a year ago.” According to Billboard.com, the publication scouted …

Newark resident Paciano Triunfo's photographs are displayed at the Hotel des Arts through June
He can turn a road into mathematics and a shiny street into a story. Put a camera in his hand and Newark resident Paciano Triunfo can do anything. Triunfo is currently a featured artist of &THEM Collective – a group of art curators based out of Union City –and numerous prints of his work are displayed and being sold out of a San Francisco hotel. The 37-year-old’s love for photography is one that surfaced at an early age. As a son of a Navy man, Triunfo, who was born in San Diego, would move around a lot, but whenever his father would return from a deployment, he would bring back cameras from overseas. And from then on, Triunfo was hooked. He joined the photography team for his schools’ yearbooks in junior high and high school and now works…

Paddy’s Coffee House and &THEM Collective’s Late Night Art Sessions will be held from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Saturday, April 7.
Union City nightlife. Now there’s an oxymoron. But next weekend, locals will actually have something to do on a Saturday night that doesn’t involve popcorn or having your new kicks stepped on at a crowded bar (in a crowded chain restaurant). Next Saturday, April 7, Paddy’s Coffee House and art curators &THEM Collective are hosting Late Night Art Sessions — an open house event that starts at 9 p.m. and lasts until 4 a.m. Throughout the night, various artists, both local and from throughout the greater Bay Area, will create live art, network, collaborate and kick back. Whether you’re an art geek or just looking to chill, everyone is invited to bring their own art supplies, grab a coffee or tea and “converge, collaborate and create,” …

Indie-rock artist Maryam Qudus, a.k.a. Doe Eye, of Union City performed an intimate acoustic set at Paddy's Coffee House on Sunday, March 25, with Cosmic Machine as her opener.
A packed house welcomed Maryam Qudus, aka Doe Eye, for an intimate homecoming performance at Paddy's Coffee House on Sunday. It was the last in a string of Bay Area performances for Qudus, who recently moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. She treated the hometown crowd to an acoustic set of her dreamy indie-rock, closing with her hit single, "I Hate You." Even people walking by squeezed their way in to get a peek and later complimented Qudus on her performance. After the show, the humble Qudus met with fans, took photos and handed out free copies of her debut EP, Run Run Run. Qudus, who is currently one of three finalists in Billboard.com's Battle of the Band's west coast region, is also reaching out to fans to help raise …

Works from Eastin Elementary parent volunteers’ “Mimic the Masters Night” are displayed at Paddy’s Coffee House through the end of the month.
Eastin Elementary School is putting parent involvement on display. The school’s volunteer-run Art Vistas program, which teaches art history and appreciation to Eastin students, recently held a parent night where parent volunteers created artwork sans their children. Works created during the “Mimic the Masters Night” in January went up this month at Paddy’s Coffee House and runs through March 31. “It gives [parents] a chance to do something they probably haven’t done since they were kids,” said Kate Sprotte, an Art Vistas parent volunteer who helped bring the program at Eastin. During “Mimic the Masters Night,” about 50 of the program’s 150 parent volunteers recreated classic masterpieces such as Vincent van Gogh’s “Café Terrace at Night,” …
