Union City X-Files: A Q&A with UFO Researcher Ruben Uriarte

A local UFO true believer sounds off on aliens, Roswell and Area 51 before taking the stage at a UFO convention this weekend.

Ruben Uriarte was 9 years old when he had what he believes was his first UFO sighting. Playing at a park in Oakland, Uriarte spotted a round object hovering in the sky. At first glance he thought it was a balloon, but he couldn’t figure out why the object was staying perfectly still. He stood and stared at the object for a long time, but it never moved.

The next day, Uriarte returned to the same park with his friends. As he was jumping off of a giant cement tube in the playground, one of Uriarte’s friends exclaimed, “Hey! Look! A flying saucer!” But by the time Uriate looked up at the sky, it had already zoomed away.

Though he didn’t see the object, Uriarte had a gut feeling that what his friend saw was exactly what he had seen the day before. Although Uriarte still doesn’t know what was floating in the sky that day, the single experience triggered a life-long obsession with UFOs, a hobby that has since turned into a job.

Now, 50 years later, Uriarte, a Union City resident who works in security full-time, moonlights as the deputy director of international investigations for the Mutual UFO Network, a national non-profit organization that examines sightings. He spends his off-time studying UFO reports, traveling to other countries for research and speaking at events like The UFO X Fest's Quest for Truth Conference, to be held Feb. 26 and 27 in San Leandro.

Patch geeked out with Uriarte as he told us about life as a UFO investigator.

Do you believe in aliens?

I certainly believe something is going on. We have t0o many credible sources for there not to be ... In our galaxy alone there is evidence that we have close to 50 billion planets. I think mathematically the numbers are there that there is a possiblility that other beings are there and have the means of travel to visit, and have been here.

How do people respond when you tell them you're a UFO researcher?

For some invidiuals, it's hard for them to understand because the subject matter challeges their belief system. I’m not in the business to convert people to become believers, it’s more that the facts are out there and I just gather the facts and present them.

Tell us more about your job.

I'm primarily involved in UFO cross retrievals along the southwest border of the US and Mexico ... Basically, these are objects, UFOs, that have crashed for reasons unknown ...We’ve had over 20,000 cases reported to [MUFON]. Out of those 20,000, at least 35 percent have been determined as unknown, while 5 percent were hoaxes and 60 percent are IFOs, or identitfied flying objects.

Have you learned anything particularly interesting through your work?

I am most fascinated by people's experiences with the unknown. What I find most interesting is that the experiences and descriptions are basically the same around the world.

I know you've appeared on TV a few times. What TV show was your favorite to be featured on?

The History Channel's UFO Hunters on UFO crash retrievals. We went to Mexico with the production staff and had an interesting time meeting UFO witnesses and people from various agencies.

Is there any truth to Roswell and Area 51?

The Roswell event is real, as we have spoken to several key witnesses that were involved in the 1947 event in Roswell, New Mexico. We have also worked closely with a number of investigators that have worked on this case. There are a number of military installations that have been reported to have UFOs on base from crash retrievals. There is an Area 51 located in Nevada that is restricted property from the general public. There have been a number of people that have claimed to have worked there.

Can you give us a preview of what you will be talking about at the conference?

I will be speaking about Mexico's Roswell case (on which Uriarte wrote a book, Mexico’s Roswell, with co-author Noe Torres), the Zone of Silence and the reported sightings of strange flying humanoids seen around Northern Mexico.

I'm mostly supportive of these kinds of pieces but I have to point out that there's something shady about an Organization which charges it's members a fee to become an "Investigator", as long as you pay the annual subscription you are an Investigator. I could point out about two dozen other "Shady" aspects of the MUFON Organization but at the end of the day who really cares?

Above all, I'd believe the guy whom everyone else thinks is crazy over the guy who goes on Television and makes a living providing his own conclusions as if they were gospel. I don't know Mr Uriarte, but I've met a few "UFO Investigators" during my short life and they didn't impress me much. A lot of the well known UFO Investigators are just riding the gravy train, if ANYONE really wanted to make the "Truth known" then they wouldn't be selling Books, or doing Shows or anything else.

The UFO Conferences are a Joke. End of.

"Yep, them thar space people done come down and beamed me into their ship and poked me with all kinda probes and stuff." Sound familiar? Yes, gentlemen, the space creatures, noted for their obvious high intelligence, actually travel millions of light years just to play with hick butts and stomp down some wheat fields. Oh, and the crashes all happened because of a faulty switch in their Ford Pinto flying saucers. We're lucky though, their factory recalled them and put stickers on all their dashboards that say to replace the switches every 40,000 light years. It gives me so much pleasure to watch the UFO sighting and ghost hunter programs. I have never laughed so hard in my life when I first saw a crop circle on TV. You people certainly are fooled easily enough. For example, look at all the ones that think gods exist. Cavemen. Eek, the sky is falling! Wake me when the human race grows out of its delusions.

Do you honestly believe that this is the only world in the entire universe, where only life exists. In a vast Universe where there are many Galaxies with many Suns similar to the one that shines upon you, do you not believe there is life out there? Do you think Man evolved from apes, just because? Did any other creatures that inhabited this planet before, evolved into intelligent beings such as Man did? Think about this. Why bother to travel light years to visit this planet. Could it be because they want to monitor the progress of the human race. It may be that they chose this planet because they found a species and a way to genetically manipulate and experiment (of course), therefore creating a more advanced being. There is no way, that an apelike creature could evolve so quickly into the modern human being of today without genetic manipulation to speed the process, and it did not happened by itself.

I'm originally from San Lorenzo, CA, currently living in Roswell. Believe me when I say that this disgusting town is full of aliens, just not from another planet! Although at times I feel that the original residents here mated with something other than their siblings to become such unaccepting, intolerant religious fanatics. Yes it's time for me to leave this place, unlovingly known as the Hellmouth!!

Ummm... yeah, well I know there are 'believers' but I have to say that while I believe there may be inhabitable planets out there, the distances are vast - even light speed vehicles, if there were possible, would have a hard time visiting us. I used to do a radio show on unusual phenomenona. After many years interviewing all the name-brand UFO experts and science-based observers including Carl Sagan, and 'wanting to believe' I came firmly down on the skeptical side. There is simply no credible evidence for alien creatures among us, visiting us, or (sadly) even communicating with us through the SETI project nor any other evidence that UFOs represent creatures from another planet - or from the hollow earth. But it sure does sell books. Would that it were so....
